When Newport Transport and Newport Council faced extensive structural challenges at their facility, they turned to ASRS for our unparalleled expertise. This comprehensive project, spanning multiple phases and buildings, showcased our ability to tackle complex issues across a large-scale site.

The Challenge:

Newport Transport’s facility, crucial to the city’s public transportation network, exhibited widespread signs of structural distress. Cracking and spalling in masonry and concrete threatened the long-term integrity of several buildings, including the main office, multiple bus sheds, and auxiliary structures.

 

ASRS Solution:

Drawing upon our extensive experience, we crafted a bespoke solution utilising the innovative Helifix system and other advanced repair techniques. Our plan aimed to distribute structural loads evenly, reinforce existing cracks, and prevent further deterioration across the entire complex.

Comprehensive Repair Strategy:

1- Office Building Complex:

  • Installation of 22 twin and single bands of Helibar stainless steel reinforcing
  • Strategic placement of 20 single Helibar bands across existing cracks
  • Application of Natcem 35 concrete repair mortar to address spalling
  • Meticulous crack injection with thixotropic cementitious grout

2- Bus Sheds (Multiple Elevations):

  • Extensive Helibar reinforcing: 30 single bands on left flank, 4 twin bands on rear elevation.
  • Installation of 244 Helifix pinning Cem ties to secure coping stones.
  • Strategic placement of 31 Helifix Cem ties for additional stabilization.
  • Targeted rebuilding of compromised masonry sections (over 3.2m² total area).

3- Gable Ends (A, B, and C):

  • Installation of 5 twin bands of Helibar 60 stainless steel bed joint reinforcing.
  • Placement of 3 single bands of Helibar 60 for crack reinforcement.
  • Addition of 216 Helifix pinning Cem ties to secure the coping stones down to the masonry below.
  • Implementation of Dryfix pinning ties at 450mm x 450mm centres grid pattern across large wall sections.

4- Additional Interventions:

  • Resin injection for crack stabilization across multiple areas.
  • Replacement of compromised/spalled bricks.
  • Comprehensive mortar and render repairs throughout the complex.
